Learn and Gain

Initiating the slogan “love it, live it”, Learn and Gain includes eight short stories, chosen to illustrate various modes of narration, as well as to provoke reflection and discussion on a range of issues. All texts utilized here illustrate how great writers can, with their insight and gift for words, help us to see the world we live in, in new probing and exciting ways.

What characterises the book, the author believes, is the integration of the skills of literary competence, communicative competence, and critical thinking within the same mould. This essentially combined input incorporates the two receptive skills of listening and reading, and the two productive skills of speaking and writing.

Upon the completion of the book, learners are expected to be able to:

• Read to find and handle information for a range of purposes, as well as read to enjoy and respond to a variety of texts.
• Write for a range of purposes, and to convey meaning in language appropriate to purpose and audience.

The current book, as such, will be of use and interest to EFL/ESL teaching practitioners, applied linguists, curricula designers, and EFL/ESL high school and university students.
