The essays collected in this book—a selection of papers presented at the conference “The Sea, The Land, The Bridge: Histories of Communication” held at the University of Prince Edward Island (Canada) in August 2005––combine various approaches, covering literary, social, philosophical and anthropological fields, in exploring the theme of the bridge. Each essay is concerned with one possible definition of the bridge as a connection between shores, countries, languages, cultures, people or communities.
The book is intended for undergraduate and graduate students and for academics in the humanities. It will be of more particular interest to scholars who are working on the history of communication and literature and on the symbolism of the bridge.
